About the Team OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. The Business Marketing team contributes to our broader mission of ensuring responsible and widespread adoption of artificial intelligence by developing and executing strategies that drive awareness, engagement, and usage for OpenAI’s products and platform amongst core business audiences. The Strategy & Operations function helps Business Marketing turn priorities into effective programs and sound investment decisions. We work across strategic planning, portfolio and resource management, budgets, measurement, and operating systems. The team is expected to jump into a wide range of programs, stand them up, and run them for as long as needed. About the Role We’re looking for a resourceful program manager and Strategy & Operations generalist to help Business Marketing tackle changing priorities. Your work may span cross-functional program management, budget planning and analysis, and designing new programs from zero to one. You’ll step into unfamiliar problems, build the structure needed to make progress, and stay hands-on through launch and ongoing operations. You’ll partner with marketing leaders, Finance, Creative Operations, and other teams to shape programs, organize and lead working teams, and clarify ownership. You’ll help leaders weigh investment decisions and trade-offs, connecting business goals with the budget, capacity, and effort required to deliver. This role combines strong financial knowledge and practical judgment with hands-on program management and a builder’s instinct. You should enjoy making sense of ambiguity, learning unfamiliar areas quickly, and figuring out how much structure a problem needs. Alongside standing up and running programs, you’ll help manage our portfolio and build AI-enabled workflows that make work easier across the department. This is a hybrid role, based on our San Francisco office three days a week. In this role, you will: - Stand up and run cross-functional programs. Take varied initiatives from initial definition through launch and ongoing operations. Coordinate dependencies, resolve blockers, adapt scope as priorities evolve, and remain accountable for running the program for as long as needed. When a transition makes sense, establish a clear owner and effective handoff. - Manage the portfolio and resource trade-offs. Maintain a clear view of active and upcoming work, team responsibilities, and available capacity. Help leaders prioritize work against business goals, identify dependencies and constraints, and choose where to invest time and resources. - Design new programs from zero to one. Clarify the problem, audience, business objective, scope, and measures of success. Turn incomplete requests into actionable briefs and practical operating models. Decide whether work belongs in an existing program, needs a new approach, or can be handled through self-service, and test and refine the solution as you learn. - Organize and lead effective working teams. Establish accountable owners, decision rights, milestones, working rhythms, and shared information. Keep stakeholders aligned and help teams make decisions and follow through. Partner with Creative Operations on staffing, capacity, agency needs, and production timelines when the program calls for it. - Support budgets and investment decisions. Partner with Finance and program owners on budget planning, tracking, and analysis. Develop clear views of costs, assumptions, expected value, and resource needs. Evaluate scenarios and explain financial and operational trade-offs so leaders can make informed investment decisions. - Build useful systems and AI-enabled workflows. Improve intake, portfolio visibility, and the shared information teams rely on. Use OpenAI products, automation, team feedback, and delivery patterns to simplify processes and reduce repetitive coordination. Build and refine solutions that people adopt and that remain useful as the business grows. You might thrive in this role, if you have: - 7+ years of experience in strategy and operations, business operations, program or project management, or related work across multiple teams and concurrent priorities. - A track record of personally organizing and leading cross-functional teams, establishing ownership, managing dependencies, and taking programs from initial design through delivery and sustained operations. - Strong financial knowledge, including experience with budget planning, tracking, and analysis. You can assess costs, assumptions, expected value, and resource constraints to support investment decisions and explain trade-offs clearly. - Strong judgment in ambiguous situations, including the ability to distinguish urgency from importance, ask the right questions, and make practical recommendations with incomplete information. - Experience building programs and operating models from zero to one, including intake processes, project structures, and portfolio systems that people adopt because they make work easier. - Hands-on experience building AI-enabled tools, automations, or workflows, with concrete examples of how they improved work. You can move from identifying a problem to testing and implementing a useful solution. - The ability to build trust with marketing leaders, Finance, creatives, and operational partners, including when you need to challenge an ask, align competing priorities, or recommend a different path. - A generalist’s approach to problem-solving: curiosity, structured thinking, comfort with unfamiliar problems, and a willingness to jump into different programs and do the hands-on work for as long as needed. - A bias toward simplicity and sustainable execution. You create clarity and momentum without adding meetings, process, or maintenance that outweigh their value.
